Different New & Used Tire Tests

Thursday, May 6th, 2010

So we all know that the Penny Test works on tires that you get from places that sell Wholesale Used Tires & regular Manufacturers .. right? If you don’t, just read the blog about it. Anyway, there’s something new called the “Quarter Test”. Let’s get a thorough explanation on all tests, shall we?

The Original Penny Test

–When you place your penny upside down on the tread of your tire, you have 2/32” of tread depth left.

–If you turn it around & the top of the Lincoln Memorial is covered, you have 6/32” of tread depth left.

The Quarter Test

–Place a quarter upside down; just like you would the penny. If Washington’s head just so happens to always be covered by the tread, you have 4/32” of tread depth left.

–So now if you don’t have a penny, you can use a Quarter; or vice versa.

Just like the Penny Test, it shouldn’t matter if you look at your Tires by Size , the Quarter Test should work (:

Penny Test

Wednesday, April 7th, 2010

The Penny Test is something that has been used for years to determine the tread on a tire. What’s cool is that all you really need is a penny & a couple of fingers; literally. It doesn’t matter if you have 12″ Used Tires or 19″ Used Tires ; it should all be the same.

1. Reach into your pocket, or wallet; wherever you carry pennies, & hold it between your thumb & your forefinger. Make sure Lincoln’s head is the side of the penny that’s facing you.

2. After you’ve completed this extremely hard task, glide the penny between the tread grooves on your tire. When you do this, be sure that Lincoln’s top part of his head is the part touching the tire; so essentially, the penny will be upside down at this point.

3. As you’re gliding the penny, if you see Lincoln’s head completely, then I’d say it’d be time to change your tires. If there is any point where Lincoln’s head is blocked by the tread, then you’ll be fine (:

Hope this helps,
